Yesterday – although I start to lose track of the days – I had an exciting day (by some’s standards), or perhaps a boring day. I didn’t do much.. I ran, layed out in the pool on a raft, layed out on a hammock, played with my dogs, and checked e-mail. I have some phenomenal color from it now, but that’s not what I’m excited about…. the exciting thing is that I sat around, just paying attention to the audio book I was listening to. This book is so exciting, that you’ll want to read on. It’s so exciting that I wanted to give it my full attention! The last few weeks, I’ve been multi-tasking like a one-legged man in a shit-kicking contest. I often do… and I always think I can. In truth, it’s been scientifically proven that one can’t truly multi-task. I mean.. yeah… there are millions of functions your body does at once- I believe it’s about 65,000,000 functions just to keep you from falling when you stand up… but doing multiple projects at once, or even a few things at once (say… driving and talking on the phone), and your efficiency goes down drastically. So… I was (am) listening to the most amazing Audio Book, and nothing else. It felt great. I felt, for the 1st time in a while, that I was on vacation. Even at Burning Man… I was enjoying the sites, but taking photos, and handing out cards, and having people sign releases. This book is so great though, I wanted to make sure it had all my attention.
What book is it that I’m talking about? Tim Ferriss’s “Four Hour Workweek” ! It’s brilliant! This man has accomplished so much… but I’m not talking about CEO of this company, and raised this much money.. I mean.. he’s doing exactly what I’m doing (minus the couch thing, and he’s not exactly driving everywhere), but in style… and lots of it! This guy goes and gets his kickboxing training in Thailand, his tango lessons in Buenos Aires, has won the National Kickboxing Championship in China, has a best-selling book, has a successful nutrition product, meets strange animals… just look at his blog! It’s exactly how I’d like mine to be– ‘cept I want my own original adventures. So…. this book… it’s my version of a perfect book. It’s entertaining. It’s easy to follow, and keeps moving at a pleasant pace. Parts of it (case studies) sound like a novel. Other parts are so thorough, complete with extremely useful links to everything you can think of (and many things you can’t think of) in order to travel, have adventures, leave your job (if you have one), automate your business so you aren’t needed in it. In short, it’s a great way to get motivated to enjoy your life. People are always saying to me “I wish I could do what you are doing!” I always say “You can!” but this Ferriss guy proves it.
He speaks at Princeton, and other highly-heralded institutions. As part of that, he had a challenge, that these kids should contact some really hard to reach people – presidents, actors, whomever… Well.. I am going to contact Mr. Ferriss. Perhaps I will not get to Couch Surf over there. Perhaps I won’t get to join him on one of his world-wide adventures… but.. perhaps I will. His book, along with the direction that things were taking anyways, has gotten me pretty frigging excited. Tonight I sent a letter to Dane Cook, and one to Marilyn Manson to ask if I can couch surf with them. If you know some cool celebs — people who stand out though, and seem interesting or crazy… let them know about me– see if they got a couch.
