Yesterday was Craig Allen’s birthday. There’s already many adventures with Craig, but I’m currently staying with him as my sort of HQ. I was designated driver, and we were going to hang out with Jason Moffatt. I’ve couchsurfed with Jmo in San Diego, and since then he’s gone on to get an RV, to go around the country.
Jason has actually teamed up with Randy Primm, the Road Bandit, who already was on the road in an RV for 2 years. With Jason’s marketing and people knowledge, they should be a force to reckon with.
Another one of my couches, David Gonzaelz, has a marketing and networking event every month, the Internet Marketing Party. David had invited Jason to be the speaker at this month’s event, and Jmo agreed. I was stoked, ’cause that meant we’d both be in Austin at the same time, and I’d get to meet Randy.
Craig and I made it to Freddie’s – the bar where we met up with everyone last night. It was instant fun. Lots of cool people there. Micahel Lovitch was there, and I had just couchsurfed with him last week in Dallas (see Poker Night story). I caught up with Jason a little bit, and then got to meet Randy… who is really tall (in fact, that’s what he wrote for his name tag). We immediately got along, and spent the rest of the time at Freddie’s just chatting with each other about travel, about adventure, about the experiences that we can’t really share on our blogs
.
The rest of the evening was spent at Six Lounge (where the Internet Marketing Party always takes place). I was the sober one, but that didn’t bother me. Jason gave his presentation (I filmed it). It was a good crowd, but Iwhat got me excited was the conversation with Randy. We decided that it would be pretty entertaining (after we compared off-blog stories) if we joined forces. I’m not ready to get an RV, and make an RV gang… but since he’s a video editor, and I’m a video editor / photographer, and we all get in our various sorts of trouble… teaming up would be fun.
Their next destination is New Orleans for Fat Tuesday to celebrate Mardi Gras. I’ve been to N’Orleans, but never on Mardi Gras. This could make for some good photography, videos, stories, and memories. I don’t have a ride back though…..
So, I think I’m going to go to New Orleans with the Road Bandits, and party it up in Mardi Gras. To get back I may hitch hike, or… find someone in New Orleans who’ll drive me back in exchange for the 8 hours of consulting that we can fit into the ride. I think I’m leaning towards hitch hiking, as I”ve never done that, and that could make for some fun footage and stories.
Have you ever hitch hiked? Do you have any cool Mardi Gras stories?
Extensive HH experience '82-'83, Mammoth Lakes to Long Beach, California almost every weekend, 350+miles. My advice? Keep asking questions to keep the focus on them. Of course, being a guy, you probably won't be asked if you feel safe because you are 'packing'. I've ridden in the bed of many a truck, been bought many a meal, and made many lifelong friends, as well as secured the driving position as to NOT end up being found at the end of some desert road. GLM. Looking forward to your event!
