Photos of Elizabeth Potts Weinstein before Ori, and after Ori

Notice a difference between these photos?

“Ori is the first photographer to get pictures of me that actually look like me. #onereasonheisawesome” Elizabeth Potts Weinstein wrote this after seeing the first photo I sent her from our weekend’s shoot.

I had promised her that I would give her a different look.  Maybe I’m a photo elitist, but I thought her old photos were pretty generic, and certainly did not capture her personality.

The outfits were corporate (turns out she didn’t even own a tshirt, and hasn’t worn one in about 10 years), the smiles seemed fake.  These photos did not say to me “I am adventurous, like to enjoy life, and even used to go spelunking!”

When I found out that EPW didn’t even own a tshirt, I immediately made sure that all our shots were in tshirts…. which led to an interesting phenomenon… Elizabeth actually had an awkward moment… she has not worn a tshirt in so long, that it felt alien to her.  She even looked different.

Once we got past outfits, I rummaged through my stuff… what would be different than corporate looking pics?  How about swords, helmets, skateboards, vodka, and wearing silly hats?  Oh yeah, let’s not forget Ziplining.

I had to coach EPW through making faces, being more expressive, helping the camera capture that you’re having fun.  What do you think? Is there a difference between the two slideshows (other than my logo) ?

Since then, EPW has purchased 3 fun tshirts.  I also gave her other homework, such as practicing expressions in the mirror.  This is something I recommend you try as well, especially if you do video, or are in photos often.

Fun photos are one of the benefits of having me couchsurf with you, or coming to adventure with me.

This first slideshow shows you Elizabeth’s “Before” photos…

This slideshow shows you pictures that I took.

First, thank you so much Ori for letting me couchsurf & adventures w/ you & for this photography … not sure how you do it, but you have this ability to really see me & get it out of me in a picture. That weekend was exactly what I needed … and finally having pics of me looking like *myself* makes me happy! :)

(weird to see all those older pics of me in that slideshow, some of the before's I look so 2-dimensional)

We went through my clothes & you rejected everything I owned & said you were making me wear a t-shirt … it was so bizarre to stand in front of a mirror & slip that first t-shirt over my head. Like putting on youth. What a small thing that made a huge shift of state.

As I said in my post-weekend blog post http://elizabethpottsweinstein.com/austin – letting myself just trust in you & do whatever you said (clothes, props, expressions, etc.) was such a big deal for me. But what an amazing way to free myself at the same time.

Dear person who is reading this comment – if you have an opportunity for Ori to take your pictures (and even better, also adventure/couchsurf w/ him), take it. He will create something that is more than what you wanted and is exactly what you needed.

Thanks so much Ori. You freaking rock.

Great Pics Ori. You can definitely see EPW’s true, amazing Aura and Light in the new pics. It’s as if she was “hiding” in the original pics. Look at how awesome her authentic smile is in the pics you took. You somehow manage to bring out that quality in everyone that is lucky enough to be around you ;-)

Great job Ori! Super big difference :-)

Very different. All I can say is I now RELATE to the new EPW whereas before she was someone from across the room at a conference. I think this adventure has only just begun…

OK, I'm going to be contrary, but not just to be contrary: I think some of the “befores” are great. Like the one of EPW holding her kid and feeding a goat? (I think it's a goat.) Lovely. As are a bunch of them. In the “afters” you have the benefit of a pretty big weight loss, too. Not that they aren't fun and natural and great, but that's a significant edge right there.

I think I recognize a hat that Elizabeth is wearing in one of these shots! Nice job Ori.

I agree the goat one is awesome indeed. It sort of ruins my thesis, and I almost didn't include it… as it is more 3 dimensional and alive than the rest of her old pics. But if you go through EPW's FB photos, the majority of them are (as EPW said) 2 dimensional.

Any photo of a person is a good photo… in the regard that it at least captured a moment in time, and can be shared. It tells a story. Except for that goat picture, the story that was being told was not representing EPW accurately.

When I travel through cali again, I'm sure we'll get a photo shoot with EPW & Gracie, and that will be intensely fun.

One of the interesting things is that my good “before” pictures are ones w/ my daughter. She's able to get the real me out of me too. :)

And yes, I've lost 40 lbs since the earliest pictures! :)

    That's awesome Heather :) … and I totally agree, I'm going full out adventureness now … ;)

Remember how I talked about epic being an absolute? This is epic. Freakin' and absolutely epic. And all I can think of is “I am so lucky to be friends IRL with these people!!!”

Ori…… I find it much easier and rewarding to practice making faces at small children in front of you in the grocery store checkout line.
I think (hard to believe, I know) the picture of her and the skateboard are some of the best of the whole slideshow.

  13. couchsurfingori Says:

We're pretty damn lucky to know you too :)

  14. couchsurfingori Says:

Thanks Mike. I gotta give EPW lots of credit too- she's a great sport for doing all that stuff.

  15. couchsurfingori Says:

EPW has become an adventure junkie :) She's starting to top my adventure efforts. The best part is that SHE can relate to adventure EPW more too :)

  16. couchsurfingori Says:

Making faces at kids is fun! The thing that sucks is that parents at the store get pissed off sometimes, and even scold their kids. They don't scold me 'caue they probably figure I'll kick their asses… but… still, the kid is learning communications, and networking, and having fun. The parents need to learn from the kid, rather than try to teach them.

The skateboard shot was definitely great for EPW, 'cause it was so far removed from her usual life. Glad you liked that set. If I got decent bearings on that, I could get some video too.
