Ever heard the term “Wow, you got a great deal on that! Did it fall off of a truck or something?” My new bed actually did!
We got here in late January, and shared an inflatable mattress for 1 person. That didn’t work out so well… so, off to Costco to get a queen-sized aerobed. It was actually pretty great! Dual layer, so it was the height of a real bed on a box-spring. The other day, our bed sprung a leak! We woke up to a loud “Psssssssst” sound… kind of like the toilet being stuck in flush mode or something…. the leak was strong, because we could actually feel the bed getting lower and lower. This was the night we brought the couches here, so…. we got off the remainder of our bed, and went snuggled on the big couch. Glad we got those couches! That evening we drove to Smyrnah and checked out another ad from Craigslist. Since we really wanted a bed, we weren’t so picky this time, and it seemed like a great deal: $300 for a bed (box spring, queen-sized mettress, frame, headboard, footboard), large dresser, night-stand… and we got them to throw in this beautiful shower curtain, and they offered us two end-tables for the living room. We gave them a deposit, and the next day were coming back to get the stuff (shower curtain and end tables fit in my car that night). The day we got the couches, we were originally going to get some from Ikea, and Skizzy was going to lend me his pickup truck… but Ikea ran out of the couches we wanted, and we ended up finding some much cooler couches for a much better price through Craigslist, and rented a U-haul so that nothing would fall out, etc… This time I got Angela from work, and brought our laptops. We went to an internet cafe, and tried to find a rental place to get a truck. Since we didn’t want to get a truck in Smyrnah, watch our milage, and bring it back, Angela suggested we just call Skizzy and get his large pickup… so we did! We were supposed to have it back by 8pm, and we left his place slightly before 6. Now, I’m not sure if you’ve ever heard of Atlanta’s rush-hour traffic… but it has a reputation… and for a reason! We didn’t make it in the 20 minutes the GPS said we would. It was more like 7:15 that we finished loading the truck, and getting on the road. Did I mention that I never stopped for rope? The back of the pickup had the bed frame disassembled, the dresser up-right, the mattress and box spring vertically, leaning against the dresser, with the head/footboards leaning on that to weigh it down. It was about 10 minutes later, on our way to Home Depot to get rope that we had the “Did something fall out of the truck?” moment! Thankfully, there were no cars behind us at the time! I was stressing out. Not only because now our investment was not as good of a value, but I did NOT want to have to find a massive wreckage with injuries (or lawsuits) due to someone crashing into our furniture. A U-turn revealed that the mattress, box spring, and boards had managed to escape the vehicle, and make a new home on the road. The mattress had in fact been run over by a car. The boards splintered. The box spring was dinged, but not broken. All I can say: Thank god for “Emergency Blinkers” being standard on vehicles (When I was a kid, I remember we had this reflective triangle thing with a blinker, for emergency)! There was no room to pull over, and if there was, we woudln’t want to use it… we wanted to block the lane, so that no more destruction would occur. Cars were honking, but no one hit us. Most people waited behind us, then changed lane when possible, and moved on. Some people were assholes, like there was something we could do about it. We salvaged our bed roadkill, and drove slowly… with our blinkers still on. The rope we got at Home Depot seemed to do the job, and we made it home. I had called Skizzy before the furniture went for a flying lesson… he was ok with me bringing the truck back late, which was great, as 8pm was not even close after the evening’s occurances! We also got some wood glue… just in case we could piece the bed together. We brought our new belongings in, and the fighting continued. Your fault, my fault, I guess it doesn’t matter… We were both pretty pissed off. I went to bring the truck back to Skizzy’s place, and left Angela to try and glue the bed-frame together. She texted me “The only thing I need in my bed is you.” I’m sure that took a lot of work on her behalf, because I wanted to avert the fight, but am not sure I could’ve broken the ice and said something nice. So.. the peace had been made. We slept that night on our non-inflatable frameless mattress, and it was pretty comfy. Today I bought one of those 4″ memory foam mattress toppers. Let’s see if it helps any — although I won’t know for another 2 days… It was vaccum sealed, and needs 72 hours to inflate.
