I worked … I do that a lot… and then in the afternoon, we drove next to the fence… and crossed the border into Mexico.
We walked around– at 1st it was all pharmacies! I hear you can get just about any drug you want there…. without a prescription, and often cheaper. That’s what I hear… since I’m perfectly healthy, and have no stress, I didn’t need Valium / Xanax / Oxiconton or whatever other fun things college kids are selling these days — although, I suppose some Adderall would’ve been good, since I’m always working. Regardless, we kept walking. Janet was looking for boots - which she found…. $450 pair of nice boots for like $100. I checked out a guitar, but was not 100% thrilled… think I’ll go for an accoustic with an electic input.
We had dinner… I was looking for something Mexican to take pictures of, and what do you know??? 2 Mariachi’s came in with their guitars… turns out they’re traveling also… I got video of them singing…. Doing the whole “Hi.. my name is ______ and I’m here in ______ with CouchSurfingOri” was a little bit difficult since I’m very non-fluent in Spanish….
We left the place, and then the country… Immigration officials were giving me grief for the camera– something like this:
Sir, did you take any pictures here?
Oh yes… I took pictures of the Mariachis… and my dinner…. and….
no sir, I mean… HERE (referring to the border-crossing station… a federal property- there are all sorts of rules when it comes to federal properties, and federal employees… in case you didn’t know)
Hmmm… well… you’re not jumping around… and you’re not playing guitar… so (pat her on the back) I’m sorry… you’re just not interesting enough for me to shoot.
Other border patrolman: So… you’re a photographer (big camera around my neck)– Who do you work for?
I hand him my card…. he loves it, of course…. and the female official did not want a card…. It was amusing as hell though… you could see his eyes light up from that picture on my card ![]()
