George Carlin - we shall miss you! (He died for those who didn’t know)

George Carlin.  What an inspiration.  Heart failure at 71….

Gosh…. some would say I am so morbid.  I haven’t blogged in forever… I did get to couch surf some, since my last post- but that’s another post.  My last post was about my dog dying, and this one’s about George Carlin.

Some of my favorite  George Carlin moments are:  His “Who is this god guy” that can be found as the introduction to Zeitgeist The Movie (just google it).  His character of Cardinal Glick in Dogma.  And, many people have never seen this one– check him out in “The Aristocrats” (I got free Sushi because I played this movie and my girlfriend at the time lost her appetite), which has every famous comedian in it, and is just riotous.

George was not afraid to say what’s on his mind.  I think that’s why I respect him.  I am not sad for George Carlin for dying… I am sad for the world for having one less individual like George Carlin.  I hope his inspiration to be rude, funny, and say what you think, while mocking authority figures lives on. George Carlin — you shall be  dearly missed!

My dog died :(

Peanut Bengal will be missed forever.  I have that Whitney Houston song stuck in my head… “And I… will always love you” complete with Saxophone solo.  Peanut was a Shlepard…. 1/2 lab, 1/2 shepard. I got the call this morning from my parents.  When they called last night to tell me, I had already passed out because I had thrown up a lot at dinner, and was coughing a lot.  I got home and passed out.  Today, I was on the ellipticals when I got the call… I was running with tears running down my face.  At 1st I thought my dad was kidding, then I was like “oh well” then all these thoughts came into my head– the feeling of Peanut’s tongue against my face when I came back from jogging.  There was this one time when Peanut ran through the back-yard screen to demolish my punching bag!  He was NOT allowed to run through the screen, and that was an expensive 180 pound bag… but it was priceless!  He was scared of it, and kept crying the whole time… 1st he barked at it, then he growled at it, and then (since it was still swinging from my last hit), he bit it, and swung from it…  he tore it up, and torrents of sand poured out.  Then he kept at it…. tearing piece after piece of canvas.   There was just a tiny piece of canvas that he could barely reach… he was already jumping to reach what he reached.  It was this tiny piece, and this metal chain hanging from a tree…. there was a pile of sand, and a growling jumping dog with bleeding teeth.  It was time to put away the chain!

Peanut was so fun!  He’d drag me around with a leash while I wore rollerblades.  He’s jumped out of the car one time while I was driving.  He smoked pot and ate pieces that fell.  He’d eat just about anything.  He was scared of the pool… puppyhood trauma.  He ate the crotch off one of my girlfriend’s jeans (not while she was wearing them).  He loved to lick my other dog’s crotch all the time.  He could sit, paw, and balance a milk-bone on his nose.  When I’d be gone for a while (especially when I was couch-surfing all of 2007),  and then come home, he’d lay on the ground and cry and wait for me to rub his tummy.  He’d sing when I played piano. He’d lay at the foot of my bed. He loved to play fetch!  Even at his age, he’d still run fast. He was strong… he was cute… he was friendly…  he will be missed!  I’ll post photos and videos of him lately… I have a bunch.

Hey you! Yeah you! Read this, help save a life!

Isn’t he cute? I haven’t done video editing in a while. This was worth losing sleep over. We’re almost at half way– it looks like Sam’s going to get his surgery!

SAVE A LIFE! Very time sensitive!

My new friend Kristin just found out 1 week ago that her very best friend in the world, Sam The Poodle, has a medical condition, that if untreated will kill him. Sam is one year old, and her very best friend in the world!

PLEASE, go to his new site and make a donation. Every penny helps!
www.SavingSamThePoodle.com
I donated my resources to make a website to try and save his life. The procedure has to be done within the next two weeks, or Sam will start having seizures, and then die. It’s a special procedure that has to be done at the University, and it costs $2,500. People have already begun to donate, and every cent helps!

PLEASE, go to his new site and make a donation. Every penny helps!
www.SavingSamThePoodle.com

Some sick people out there say “Why bother? Why not just put him to sleep, and get a new dog?” These individuals would probably not donate a kidney to save their child’s life. Some people think a dog is just a dog. Some people are not dog people. Even if you’re one of these people , you can still help! After donating a photo shoot for the cause, I made some coffee mugs, a mouse pad, and a beer stein that are all cute and amusing. You can buy those, and that will send a few dollars towards the cause.

PLEASE, go to his new site and make a donation. Every penny helps!
www.SavingSamThePoodle.com

Kristin is so heart broken, and I don’t think she could stand losing this sweet soul that won’t go to sleep unless he’s on her pillow with his legs up in the air.
As a special bonus, anyone who donates over $10 will receive a Sam The Poodle screen saver that’s not available for sale anywhere! A $40 value! You’ll have many incredible photos to cheer you up and make you and your friends say “awwwwwwwwww!”

A second bonus, anyone who donates more than a dollar can know that they helped save a life! You can know that you’ve actually done something incredibly important!
FREE GOOD KARMA WITH EVERY DONATION!

Please please please! I beg of you, repost this, or e-mail it to everyone you know! This is extremely time-sensitive

Furniture shopping: Life is like the movies!

Movie Reviews and Reminiscing - who we were makes who we are.

While watching many movies lately, I was reminded by one about my past. Skim past the movie reviews to get to it, or read the reviews, and then get to it!

Got a laptop? Shake things up at the Waffle House!

With over 36 streets named “PeachTree” and a waffle house on every 3 blocks of those, it’s easy to get lost in Atlanta. I’m glad I have my GPS, of course, but sometimes it’s nice to just “Get lost.” I found this Waffle House out of convenience… it’s across the street from Skizzy’s place, and he’s asleep. We went to the studio last night and shot Skizzy (Couch 24) & his pregnant girlfriend, Alyx (couch 57). I guess this is more fun though than hanging there. Not that it’s not fun hanging out over there. The cat and I get along great, and there’s a cute doggie to play with! However, I am sitting here at Waffle House, stealing internet from the Pig-n-Chik BBQ, and writing to the world. It’s fun! I got this awesome food — waffles, buttered toast, eggs, bacon, and these tomato-cheese-and-mushroom covered hash browns. The ambient noise is the rhythmical slamming of plates into the sink, ice scoops into the ice-bin, soda pouring, water running, and the constant sizzle of eggs, bacon, and sausage being cooked on that grill.

Some days are better than others… sometimes it’s weeks…. Poor Angela.

I think I’ve been all right. I’m exercising often, eating fairly well, and have had an internet connection that’s steady. I haven’t been able to order internet from Comcast, Adelphia, AT&T… and AT&T had purchased Bellsouth as well as many other DSL providers that used to service the area. Frigging monopoly! Anyways… Bellsouth is what my neighbors all have, and the only thing that comes out to our area. I ordered service from Cavalier, which called me back a day or 2 later, saying that I can’t have DSL… but they sent me a bill for a regular phone line I didn’t even want. Today there was no internet. I should’ve taken that as a sign, right?

I’ve broke 200 pounds! :)

If anyone remembers my Road-Cappuccino-caused fatness story (basically, I drank them at every gas station, and when it got cold I stopped exercising, and then got to my fattest, and my dad even made fun of me and called me fat), I had gotten to 215 pounds without exercising, and even had one of those “They must have changed the way they measure clothes and label them, ’cause I know I’m a size 32!” moments! Yeah… it’s embarrassing (not the buying size 34… just not being able to admit that “Life grows on”)… so… I took matters into my own hands, and have been exercising all of 2008. As of yesterday Continue reading ‘I’ve broke 200 pounds! :)’

Tetris + Dreams = Independent Lady Magazine decision.

Robert Stickgold and his colleagues at Harvard Medical School in 1994 actually proved that the Tetris Effect exists. You can read about it in Scientific American. The term can be seen in Wikipedia as well. What Stickgold and associates proved was a new understanding of what dreams are…. that the brain is actually solving problems while you sleep. If you play Tetris for a while before going to sleep, you will actually see it in your dreams…. you’ll see the pieces falling, even as you close your eyelids. The Tetris Effect has expanded with more research to show that people who play A LOT of Tetris will actually start seeing every day items as 4-block items, and try to figure out how to rotate them, and even halucinate a little and see Tetris pieces falling in their periphery. What does this have to do with anything? Continue reading ‘Tetris + Dreams = Independent Lady Magazine decision.’

I may have done something bad. What to do??

I mention Independent Lady Magazine a little too frequently lately. Last night, (I still haven’t slept… though not just because of this) in the middle of the night, I decided that I’d set up a MySpace page for Independent Lady Magazine and then I went and designed a few mock covers… no false article text or anything.. just the words. I suppose since I made a MySpace page, I had to keep going, to make it look good. And, while initially it was supposed to be a spoof, the more I wrote, the more I realized that I can actually turn this into a real magazine! The reasons are plenty: Continue reading ‘I may have done something bad. What to do??’

You can make money with google ads?

So, I mentioned that I’m actually stationary for a tiny bit.  One of the people I saw lecture while on the road was Joel Comm.  This guy practically invented the internet (he DID invent what is now “Yahoo Games”), and is a god-like figure for people who believe in Google AdSense.  What is it, and why you should click on the new ads that appear all over my site?  Continue reading ‘You can make money with google ads?’

Getting in shape! Mental and physical fitness go hand in hand!

I did mention that my new adventure is keeping me in one place for a little bit… One benefit of not being on the road as much is that I can exercise on a regular basis, and watch what I eat!  True story– I WEIGHED THE MOST THAT I’VE EVER WEIGHED… Just last month! Where in the world is Couch Surfing Ori?   That’s what the text message often says.  Joe of Couch 56 sends it every month, sometimes more frequently.  His wife recently took to Couch Surfing, and was even my 1st guest at my new place.  So… based on the fact that you know my definition of adventure as doing new things that you haven’t done before….. Independent Lady Magazine - Here’s the man to hire as your editor!

Seriously!  I did not modify this in any way!  The punctuation, spacing, and spelling…. this is a straight-up cut/paste job.  It’s a pretty long reply, considering that Mr. Independent Lady Magazine said not to write, ’cause my emails will not be read.  So… he read my e-mail and replied.  I simply can not get angry at a letter like this, because the horrific grammar is just so amusing.  How can you take something like this seriously?  Especially when the guy tells you he’s a great editor, and his project is “a magazine”!  I’m sure “God” will lead him in the right direction all right :)  I definitely agree with that part.  Enjoy this fabulous letter from Mr. Independent Lady Magazine, telling me off. Independent Lady Magazine - a case study in marketing and education

I’ve couch surfed for over a year now… and the whole time I was doing it, and even now, I kept educating myself. Audio books, books, online courses, forums, seminars with the best in the world, and conversations with the same. Most my education on this trip was about business and marketing. I love marketing, it’s a passion of mine. That scathing (but true) article I wrote about Independent Lady Magazine is a perfect example of how much I have learned. Why is that? Independent Lady Magazine

Independent lady magazine is the name of a project I was going to take on. I’ll tell you about it, since you know I hate having my time wasted, and this is a wonderful story of time wasting. Angela was looking for projects for me, and found someone on CraigsList.org that needed a magazine layout done. Their initial project that they tried to get me to do for free to cheap was to photoshop the text off a cover that someone had sent as a proof… on a photo that they didn’t have the rights for. A day of rollercoasters… a great deal… great movies… and mental struggle.

I woke up today, after my 1st “full night’s sleep” in a long long time.   I guess I really needed it.  My running time had improved by 6.5 minutes, which is huge.  Jeffery leaves movies looping for Charlie, his dog.  When I got back from running, I noticed that one of my all time favorite movies was on, Gattaca — the ultimate triumph of the human soul movie… as far as I’m concerned.  I watched parts of it, as it looped and we chatted about life.  When we went to Six Flags’ Magic Mountain, I got a wonderful deal…. $60 (the price of a 1 day admission) gave me a 1 year pass… that I can use at all Six Flags park across the country!  That means I’m going to have many more rollercoaster days this year! That deal is on until April, I think… I’d recommend it for any rollercoaster fans.  We had a blast… going on all the different coasters… being flung forward, backwards, upside-down, and from all different heights.  My favorite part was towards the end… the park closes at 6pm, and at 5:50 we got off the tallest drop rollercoaster I’ve ever been on, Goliath.  We headed towards Colossus, which was supposed to really whip us around, and beat us up… like an old wooden rollercoaster.  As we approached it, a security guard told us that the ride is closed, and the park is closed.  I decided to be stubborn, and go anyways… sure enough, they had a group of people in line.  Enough to fill up all the cars once, and then once more.  We got to go after all!  If we had listened to that man, and delayed even one minute, we would not have gotten to hit our final ride.  I think I enjoyed it doubly…. once for the brutal shaking that I received, and once for the smug satisfaction that I got for being rewarded the ride because I chose to disregard authority.  Because of some of the conversation we had today, I requested to see Chaplin from Jeffery’s collection.  Chaplin is the movie made from Charlie Chaplin(whom Jeffery’s adorable dog is named after)’s autobiography.  What a beautiful film!  Charlie Chaplin was brilliant, and Robert Downey Junior was amazing as Charlie.  The movie, left me a little sad… despite the happy ending, and humorous majority.  I think I was sad because of how he was kicked out of the USA. I didn’t like that people used the whole communist thing against him, even though he wasn’t a communist.  I guess it was a different era, eh?

Maybe I was saddened by the Charlie thing, because I was a bit confused about my own situation.  I’m trying to raise funds to continue my trip.  Things are going well, but I’m too scattered.  I’m not sure if I have ADD, or if I am just trying to achieve too many things at once!  I’m couch surfing, blogging, editing photos, trying to assemble my portfolio, make Photoshop training DVD’s, set up a few websites– some for myself and my projects, some for clients, do some Photoshop work, learn, jog, promote.  Even keeping up with emails seems difficult at times.  Maybe I need some Adderall?  Before I try to get things done by popping some pill to stay focused, I’d like to just try to practice a few new skills without it… skills like time management.  I bought a watch the other day.  I like how it looks, and I like being able to tell the time without pulling out my cell phone.  I’ve tried making lists, and things like that before… it’s often against my personality.  I like to be spontaneous.

Thoughts?  Suggestions?  Assistance?

I’m going to magic mountain!

Again… spur of the moment! “When are you leaving? Or are you moving in?”  “Hmmmm… I thought I’d leave.” “If you want to stay one more night, we can go to Magic Mountain… I was going to wake you up and ask… but I saw that you sent me an email at 5:30am- and I woke at 7″  “Sure!”  So… off to Magic Mountain with Jeffery “Factory 1019″ Scott.  I ran some errands, got home tired at 8pm or so…. and then I was going to take a nap, but decided to just sleep all night.  I needed it!  I feel so damn good today!  I went running, and beat my best time by 6.5 minutes! (I’ve been running the same path, complete with much uphill every day I’ve been here). Now, it’s off to rinse off, and have some fun at the mountain (a roller coaster park)!

Resolutions: 12 ways you can keep them!

I find New Year’s Resolutions to be a pain in the ass…I can remember being a kid, being slightly overweight, and starting every year with a list of new year’s resolutions… and then failing.  The end result is that I lost belief in myself.  I thought perhaps I can’t meet goals, or achieve what I want.  To think that I’ll be a fat loser.  Now, I have a modeling profile, and people always tell me how handsome I am.  In middle school, I was embarrassed to take my shirt off in the locker room… now I’ll prance around in my underwear in front of strangers. So… here’s the deal:

1)Don’t set up a New Year’s resolution!  You’re going to have more goals this year than just that one, so… just set up goals…

2)Focus on one goal at a time.  You can make more friends, eat less junk food, go to the gym more often, lose 100 pounds, increase your salary, and learn a foreign language.  But it takes 21 days to form a habit, and if you’re working on 4 things at once, you won’t get any of them completed. If you focus on just jogging daily…. you can do it every day for 21 days, and then you can add another goal to focus on; the daily jogging will not be as difficult to stick with now that you’ve formed it as a habit.

3)Set realistic goals.  If you want to lose 100 pounds, know it won’t be instant.  So, start with 10 pounds, and pace yourself.  You can do it, but if you starve yourself, and are completely miserable, then you’ll dislike the process, and quit shortly

4)Reverse engineer your goals, and break it down into steps.  If we’re talking about losing 100 pounds, you can probably lose 10 pounds a month without suffering.  So, that would mean that you should break 100 pounds by 10 months. When you make your steps by the deadlines, you’ll have motivation to keep going!

5)Set deadlines: Goals are dreams with deadlines.  If you don’t set up a deadline, you subconsciously can rationalize how to blow it off.  If you have deadlines, you try to figure out how to beat them.

6)Reward yourself.  If you make a goal by or near the deadline, treat yourself.  If it’s a diet, then go eat something nice.  Try to keep the reward relevant to what you’ve been doing. For example, if you lost 20 pounds, buy some new clothes!  Show off your results.  Other people will notice, and compliment you on it, which will help your inner image, and make further pursuit of the same goal much easier. In 1998, I flew to Trinidad to teach 3d animation.  They fed me so much, that upon my return I could not fit into a certain pair of pants.  I had gained about 10 pounds in 3 weeks. I was upset at myself, and signed up for a gym membership.  I started doing cardio, and lifting weights, and in about 3 weeks, people started asking if I’ve been working out.  Then it got to the point where some heads even started turning, and I started wearing tanktops…. I never wore tanktops before that.. I was too embarrassed to. The point is, because I stuck with it for just a little bit, I got some results.  People noticed those results, and that helped me get even more results.  It actually got to the point where I could bench press 255 pounds.   When I started, I could barely lift the bar.  If I hadn’t gained that extra weight in Trinidad, I wouldn’t have the physical build that I do these days.

7)Have accountability!  Get a friend who’s got the same goals. This is like the sponsor  thing for Alcoholic Anonymous.  “Help! I’m thinking of eating a donut!” If you’re dieting with a friend, you know that someone else is watching your progress, you’re less likely to cheat or quit.  You can set up challenges between you, or perhaps a bet.  Make it big– for example; We both need to lose 30 pounds…. Let’s jog together 3 times a week, and let’s place $500 each in an escrow account (or something like it)… if one of us quits before beating the goal, they lose the money.  If you have something big you may lose, you’re more likely to keep at it. Tell others your goal.  This is another form of accountability.  If others know, then you’re not as likely to quit… perhaps a fear of embarrassment.

8)Be informed. Do research on the best ways to make your goals. The internet and book stores are filled with so much information on everything!  You can learn 3d animation, photoshop, culinary techniques, basket weaving, gardening, foreign languages, hypnotism, diet techniques, fitness techniques, photography, and quantum physics… all for free!  The public library has a ton of material as well.  To top that off, doing things online allows you to find other people with the same goals– i.e. other diet buffs, or people looking for more success.  There’s a great website you should checkout: www.meetup.com for example.  It lets you find other people in your area that like to do… whatever it is you like to do.  Online forums let you discuss your results, post questions you may have, and have discussion of methods.

9)Study other techniques for goal-setting.  There are many world famous individuals that specialize in achievment… people such as Tony Robbins, Zig Ziglar, T. Harv Ecker, and many more.  The thing to watch out for, again, is to set up realistic goals. These guys have good points, and good techniques.  However, some of them make you feel super powerful, and then when you don’t get quick results, you feel like a failure, and they’ve done more harm than good.  So.. be realistic.  There are many many books on how to achieve goals regarding anything… so be specific.  How to improve your sales… versus How to improve your sales of Vacuum cleaners to 3 person families in the midwest.  Another good trick is just to watch people who’ve succeeded before you.

10)Work on your inner image!  If you work on your self image, then you’re much more likely to get the external result. If you’re fat, then you diet, but you still see yourself as fat, you’re very likely to bloat back up.  If you’re fat, and see yourself as a thin person, the dieting and exercise will come much more easily, and will more likely stay off.  If you’re trying to quit smoking, you need to see yourself as a non-smoker, not as a smoker who’s trying to quit. That is the basis for hypnotherapy.  There are books and videos to help with the self image.  For some people it might be “The Secret” for others it might be a more scientific approach such as “The New Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz & Dan Kennedy “.  Having goals, and using tools such as visualization to see yourself achieving them is very powerful, and scientifically proven to be effective.  They say that golf is 90% in the mind.

10)Take action now!  The longer it takes for a thought to be converted to action, the less likely it is to succeed.  You don’t want to get “Paralysis by analysis”  Have daily goals… even if it’s just one thing.

11)Show off your results. People notice, and that’ll help you keep motivated.

12)Don’t be too hard on yourself!  Other people making fun of you is nowhere near as bad as you making fun of you. If you’re talking about weight loss, keep in mind there are variables– for example, you may lose 10 pounds, then weigh yourself, and notice that you gained 3 pounds back…. it’s called water weight.  It’s a variable, you can go up or down by up to 5 pounds in a day… although that number’s a little extreme.  At the same time, don’t use that knowledge to make excuses.  If you’re slacking… take corrective action.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! And.. with the new year, comes a new year of Couch Surfing!

Yes…. I’ve been doing this officially for 1 year today!  There’s still so many things I haven’t gotten to tell you.  Perhaps because it takes a long time to type, perhaps it takes a longer time to go through the photos.  Either way… I’ll get to it eventually.   This e-mail is to wish you a happy new year, and let you know that this year is going to be even more exciting!

Last night, on the spur of the moment, I went to Las Vegas with Jeffery Scott (Couch 15).   I drank a lot of Long Island Iced Teas, spoke to strangers, and exchanged many stories with my good friend.  It was just the adventure I needed.  I think a big part of the adventure is that we did it on the spur of the moment.

The drive was rough– it was very windy, and I even have photos of 18-wheelers that flipped over!

Some of the things I need to tell you about are my 31st birthday, and the amazing surprise I got.  I gotta tell you about the time in Chicago I went backstage at the circus.  A recent hotel stay at the Triton hotel.  My day of snowboarding successfully.  And so much more!

The most important thing is I wanted to tell you THANK YOU FOR READING!  It means a lot to me that I’ve gotten to bring some adventure to your daily office routines, school days, or just lives in general.  I think we’re all going to have a very amazing 2008.

Thanksgiving day parade pics are back up!

Sponsors have a way of wanting things their way, and that’s understood.  When I volunteered to work at the Ronald McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in Chicago, I agreed to their terms.  One of these was that all pictures had to get approved before being posted.  I had not realized this, so had posted them quickly- and had my wrist slapped for it.  So… now that they’ve been approved, check out these awesome photos from an awesome day!

CouchSurfer smashes into concrete pole! Concrete wins! You can help!

IMG_0989 *sigh* When I used to spin out, crash into something, get hurt, fall, or anything that scares most people… I used to say “Adventure!” and smile about it. Smashing into stuff is getting old. I might do it all day long, if it weren’t for the costs involved! I wrote about how I traveled through a blizzard, and didn’t get injured, despite spinning off the road into a ditch. I thought I won, but in actuality, nature won again….

Amazon's Kindle book readerI’ve read articles for a few years now about the new “thin-monitor / electronic paper” technologies that were being researched (and lead by NEC as I recall). Here’s what seems to be the 1st one out- Amazon’s Kindle. This thing lets you read books, blogs, the news, and wikipedia electronically — even in the daytime. crashing into a ditch… again!

Driving from Chicago to Omaha in snow was scary’ish… I thought I was tough shit for driving through a snow storm. A snowstorm that had just started, and was flurrying. That is child’s play compared to the storm I drove through from Omaha, Nebraska to Salt Lake City, Utah. Oh my F’in god! This was difficult! Most of the drive I had no cell phone reception… so… I called people, and said “Oh yeah… this is a tough drive… slippery roads… rough flurries to the point where I can’t see — especially when I’m behind a giant truck. Good thing I got into that accident in January, so I learned how to drive on ice…. just tap the gas to re initiate traction, turn into the swerve, and you’re good to go!” — This WAS the case. Continue reading ‘crashing into a ditch… again!’

Drove through my 1st snow-storm! Back in Nebraska!

I’ve never driven through a snow-storm.  I was definitely watching my thermostat this time.  In January, I got smashed up pretty good when I drove on some black ice, got spun around, got hit by an suv, spun around 3 more times, and hit a concrete wall.  Since then I had learned that you’re supposed to turn into the skid, supposed to pump the gas pedal to re-engage traction, and downshift instead of slam the brakes.  I did not have to use that knowledge this time.  What I did have to use was a caffeine combination that kept me up until 5:30am: A No-Doze pill, a large capuchino, and a large bottle of Jolt-Cola’s 2X Caffeine flavor… which was actually quite tasty.  I got that combination, because other than the snow storm, I hadn’t slept more than an hour or 2, and the same for the night before, and the night before.  I was getting very tired, and could not risk falling asleep at the wheel.

Driving through the snow isn’t that bad at all.  It’s actually kind of fun (when it starts).  It’s just driving, you don’t even need to turn on your windshield wipers… but then it gets heavy after a while, and you’re getting calls from people that tell you that it’s going to be 5 inches of snow, and then trucks are splashing up salt and sludge, and your car swerves a tiny bit, and then you pull off the road, and realize you now can’t see the road, and every time you accelerate your car fishtails, and then you realize you’re writing run-on sentences!  Snow can be dangerous!  If I wasn’t tired, I’d stay and play with it… do donuts, fishtail more, drift… but… I was tired, and did want to get back to Couch 51’s in Nebraska, on my way to Vegas, and San Francisco.

Happy Hannukah! Here’s a song for you.

Hey everyone! Happy Hannukah!  Yeah… You’ve been hearing Christmas sale ads, and Christmas melodies since like… I don’t know.. June this year?  They didn’t even wait for Thanksgiving to start the sales-spam.  So.. here’s a cool little song for us jews.  I was actually going to make one myself!   I came up with some lyrics, but wasn’t good enough with that midi-controller I just got through barter.  When I get to Vegas, Couch 53 said he’ll give me a few days of Reason lessons… that should do it.  So.. in the meanwhile: Continue reading ‘Happy Hannukah! Here’s a song for you.’

From the Designer of the CouchSurfingOri Logo!

CSO-logo-web Johnny Winslow, artist extrodinaire, funny guy, great friend, and my favorite person to eat Pho (Vietnamese soup) with is the guy that designed the CouchSurfingOri logo.

Johnny is an amazing artist, and has shown me many of his superb designs for clients. More exciting than his client work is his passionate artistic stuff that he does for the love of art. That’s what these are. These latest 4 painting were done in Guache on Wood. They are at the Bear and Bird gallery, at Tate’s comics. If you’re in South Florida, you can pick up these pieces of art over there - or… you can wait one month until the exhibit is over, then buy the pieces from Johnny. Or… even better… you can hire him to do a custom piece for you!

Time for some RAM! Speed up your computer. My new workflow- additional silver lining.

Summary: Ori’s computer is in the shop, and his rental couldn’t keep up.. until he upgraded it. Having the laptop in the shop gave him a chance to recreate how he does his work. Check it out (especially if you wonder how Ori’s pictures are so darn colorful)

Check out my interview from the Nick Digilio show!

NI2D9950IMG_9953 I had such a blast being on the Nick Digilio show! It’s like calling in to a show, only better. Nick’s show, for those who don’t know it, is very entertaining. Basically, it’s another talk show on AM Radio. It’s entertaining, informative, and (I think) intelligent. They were very organized, very on time, and even provided me with a CD of the interview immediately upon walking out. Nick and Andy were very friendly - which helped calm my nerves. How did the interview go? You decide- here it is:

I’m going to be on the Nick Digilio show!!!

If you haven’t listened to him, check out Nick Digilio. You can listen live at WGN Radio tonight at midnight (Chicago time) . Or on Nick’s Podcast.  If you have time to kill, check out his audio archives!  This was how I killed a lot of time in Maryland. Continue reading ‘I’m going to be on the Nick Digilio show!!!’

Meeting Tomorrow — they saved the day!

All I have to say is that if you need a laptop, or projector, or meeting equipment… you need to check out www.MeetingTomorrow.com - it’s awesome…. they can ship your equipment overnight (with industrial packaging that’s easy to ship back).  I’ve got so much to tell you about Brooklyn and Chicago, but I have had a difficult time of it, as my laptop has been having trouble for a bit (That, and driving, finding next couches, adventuring, processing photos, and working on site takes time). It’s gotten so bad that I had to take it to the shop.  What’s “So bad” ?  Well.. running slow for one.. but when my computer growls at me, I know that it’s time (I have a similar theory with my car).  “but Ori, you can’t be without a laptop!  How can you blog or communicate with your thousands of adoring fans without one?”

Another CouchSurfingOri Song– And how Texas got his photos

NI2D2583NI2D2615 Brooklyn was a blast! I got to hang out with some very like-minded people! There were a lot of jokes, and a lot of music. Couch 60 was a recording studio, Xyayx Productions. Q of Xyayx not only teaches digital recording at Brooklyn College, but also has a huge community initiative: helping people achieve their dreams, and empower themselves. From getting your GED, to getting on your way to being a recording artist…. Q can do it. One of his students at the school is this kid, Texas. Texas is one of the few students that is invited to the house to work, and learn… an intern of sorts. He’s also a rapper, that can rap VERY fast! He wanted some photos from me, but could not afford the special rate I gave of $75. I wanted him to have my photos, but do not believe in a free lunch, so worked out a deal with him:

I’m in love with a fat girl — Live performance by Couch 60

At couch 60, the guys never stop! There’s always musicians or rappers coming through. They have “Vibe” sessions — where people just make lyrics up as they go… or music up as they go… Here’s one such session (I have a few more, but video takes a while to process, so… you’re going to have to wait):

Site changes!

Ok!  All right!  Finally!  I just deleted my site last night, and re-uploaded it , in order to set it up to be faster.  It seems to have worked.  I expected lots of errors, and feared to lose all my data.  Thankfully, my technical skills were good enough to get this going.  So… now the site runs faster- yay!  Now that that’s done, I can upload some more of the blog posts I’ve written.  So.. the look and feel of the site may be changing a tiny bit over the net few days…. Expect a map of where the couches are, a couch summary, a testimonials section, and many more photos!

CouchSurfingOri - influencing young minds!

When I started this trip, one of my intentions was to speak to school children about adventures, about living your dreams, about photography, and of course about making sure you question authority! I have to admit that I’ve been sort of slacking in that department (pursuing the presentations), but as you all know, I got mad-crazy luck (See the Brooklyn-speak :) ) and what I want usually happens through coincidences. So.. couch 60 (Q) works at Brooklyn University, teaching Digital Studio Recording. I went with Q to work one day, and he introduced me to the program director, and when she told me what they are doing, I volunteered to do a lecture. Turns out they were actually in the works on a guest speaker series… So,I’m excited to say that I am the launch lecture to that series. Continue reading ‘CouchSurfingOri - influencing young minds!’

Halloween Parade - NYC 2007

Wednesday was Halloween. I was going to meet up with my buddy Dave from south Florida. I met him at Ultra 2003 in South Beach, and then in 2005 he moved to NY. A lot’s changed for us both. I took the subway, and walked. I brought my caveman outfit. I got to Dave’s place, and the doorman said he already left. I was slightly infuriated, as I don’t like people wasting my time. At least there was a big parade that I could catch. Here are the photos from that:

Get good hosting!

I got sick of losing sleep due to GoDaddy's glitches, and crappy billing... I moved to BlueHost, and am happy! Awesome service, unlimited account hosting, and I'd love to see you use up all the bandwidth they give you for $6.50/month!
